But this is Our House

I'm on knees and elbows, peering under the couch. Husband enters the livingroom. "Well, hello there!" He happily greets my backside. "Looking for a book?" I back out and sit up on my knees, blow dust off the book clenched in my hand. "Yup." Stop and consider for a moment, look up at him. "You know, in some homes, people would look for their books on a shelf."

I'm with you on this one. We have lots of book shelves but they never seem to be near me at the point when I want to put down a book. I have stacks of books at various points around the house, that accumulate until the Queen of All She Surveys puts her foot down and I have to move them.

As a student, I have a very particular system for books:

Books from past classes are neatly on the shelves.
Books that I am using at the moment are stacked on my desk.
Books that I am not using at the moment but will be for the next paper/assignment are stacked in piles on the floor, where they will rotate to on the desk, and those from the desk will rotate to the floor.
Books that I would like to read but don't have time to, due to all the books I have to read for classes are stacked on the dresser.

Sometimes it seems like my entire life is books...

A bookshelf? What a novel idea.

Simon: A house without a few books scattered here and there, even the occasional stack of 'em, isn't a truly lived-in, welcoming house. Says me, anyway! 'Course, when your guests can't sit anywhere for the stacks of literature on every chair, you've crossed a line...

Haley: Maybe you can take some of those books on the dresser with you on your Christmas vacation. Any of them likely to be good beach reading?

Granny: We have them, just not in the living room where I do much of my reading. It's a teeny house, and we've squeezed them in where we can, but in the living room, the place you're just as likely to find one or two is, indeed, under the couch.

I understand. We have Four floor to ceiling bookshelves in the spare room, a Ikea Wireframe storage unit, one utility shelf in the storage room with boxes of books on it, one computer centre piled with books, many boxes of books stored at my wife's parent's place and even some left in the spareroom at my mum's place along with various piles of books around the our apartment and at least two magazine racks, AND THERE ARE STILL BOOKS UNDER THE COUCH. (Forgot to mention the books I take to read on the bus and leave at work)

Books on bookshelves just collect dust! At least in your house, you can tell the books are getting read!!!
And while you're searching for a book under the couch, I'm sure you'll find other treasures as well! ; )
