He Knows What I No

Ki-woon sits at a booster seat at the dining table. He holds a water bottle, the kind with the exterior flip-top straw attached to a straw on the inside of the bottle. Ours, however, have no interior straw, so they will spill if they're tipped upside down. "No!" He declares, smiling happily. "No, no!" He tips it over. Water puddles on the tray. He sets the bottle upright once more. Smiles. Because it's okay to do, when you're not quite two, as long as you know it's a no-no. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ © 2006, Mary P

i remember one day i went to Lady M's house and i had an interesting realization about Q. i went to Lady M and SwingDaddy and said, "i can tell you've been telling him not to throw things." they asked how and i said, "because every time he throws a toy, he looks at me very somberly, shakes his head and says 'No.'" :-P

Well, sure, "no"ing is half the battle after all!

My 18 month old does that so seriously. He'll stand in front of what ever temptation and say No No No No No, until he can no longer resist.

Aww. I miss babies in booster chairs!

I can't wait to hear stories of Ki-Woon growing up at Mary P's house.

Feeding Q at dinner.

Us: Would you like more chicken?
Q: No, no, no (and dives at the spoon with his mouth wide open), gulp!

Sunshine, Peter, KimmyK: Isn't he just the sweetest little guy? I love him already - and his last day is the 18th! He was just a temporary summer placement. This makes me sad.

Kari: The willing contrariness of a tot who doesn't quiiiite get it. Cute!

Granny: I don't think so, no. He knows the action is always accompanied by a "no, no" on my part, and by me helping him right it. So is he deliberately defying, or teasing, or just replicating the pattern? Hard to say at this juncture. But entertaining!

Mamacita Tina: Make sure and, eventually, learn and stop. Sooner would be good...

Lorykc: The smile. A smile of accomplishment, because he did what I do, or a mischievous I'm-making-mischief smile? Hmmm...

Kristen: And he does it so beguilingly!

Rayne: In the words of naughty Mae: "I generally avoid temptation, unless I can't resist it." :-)

LadyM: They're hard-wired to "no" at this age, they truly are. Contrary little critters.
